Where the facts on our “Basic listing” cards come from, and under which licence.

What a basic listing is

A basic listing is a place with its name, town and category, built from open data. It carries no review, rating, rank or photo. The date on each card (“Data as of”) is when we took the record from its source. We never say whether a place is open or closed; check before you go.

Sources and licences

Japan Food Facilities (JFF). Names and addresses of food businesses, processed from public health-centre records. Each record has its own licence (mostly Creative Commons BY 4.0; a few CC BY 2.0/2.1 JP, PDL 1.0 or CC0). The record licences and original publishers are on JFF’s attribution page. We keep only the name, address and business type, and we drop records whose licence expired more than a year ago.

OpenStreetMap. Places and addresses © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0. Records derived from OpenStreetMap are kept in their own file below.

Cards for places that have no website of their own link to a map search for the place’s name and address.

English names

English names come from the source where it gives one; otherwise from the Japanese reading with an automatic converter. Where the reading comes from the Japanese characters alone it is marked romaji_auto in the files and may be wrong. Names we have read and checked by hand are marked manual_corrected or manual_verified. Tell us and we will fix it.

Official and tourism websites. Sights, things to do and town details (town hall, address, phone) come from the municipality’s own website and from prefectural and local tourism websites. Each card links to the page it was taken from. We write our own short descriptions; the linked pages remain under their publishers’ own terms.

Public restaurant and accommodation listing pages. Many Dining and Stay cards were compiled from public listing pages, and each such card links to that page. Their facts (name, address, category) are short factual records; we do not copy review text.

Photos. Each photo is credited to its publisher, with a link to the source page it was taken from; these are listed on the photo credit pages and in the photo source files below. Photos from Wikimedia Commons carry their licence and author on the photo credit pages. Any photo is removed on request.

Maps. Prefecture and town maps are our own drawings based on the administrative boundaries (N03) of the National Land Numerical Information download site of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT, nlftp.mlit.go.jp/ksj), used under its terms of use: Japanese government open data terms (Public Data License 1.0, compatible with CC BY 4.0).

Town coordinates. Where a town has coordinates (in its JSON-LD and town file), they come from OpenStreetMap (399 towns, ODbL 1.0) or Wikidata (9 towns, CC0 1.0). Town codes are the national local government codes.

Getting there, nearby towns and drive times. The “at a glance” facts on town pages (nearest station and its operator, bus stops near the town centre, approximate drive times to nearby towns) are computed by us from OpenStreetMap road, bus-stop and station data (OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0) and the railway data (N02) of MLIT’s National Land Numerical Information (CC BY 4.0). Drive times are approximate.
